Fifty

Acts 2:1-2 Now on the day of Pentecost, they were together in one room. Suddenly a sound like a violent wind blowing came from heaven and filled the entire house.

It is not by coincidence that the Holy Spirit came to the Church on the day of Pentecost. There are many things that God revealed in this fulfillment of prophecy. I want to look at just one. Fifty days after the Hebrew slaves ate the Passover meal in haste and were set free, an event occurred on Mount Sinai accompanied by lightning, thunder and smoke. With a show of supernatural power, God gave Moses the law. That 50th day was significant because it was the day after 7 weeks had passed. Seven is the number of God and His perfect works. Seven times seven days after they were set free and then that explosive day when God gave us His commands through Moses – Pentecost.

We, however, could not faithfully keep God’s law. It isn’t merely the rules (don’t murder) that God requires, rather the very spirit of the law. We are all guilty as we murder in our hearts and through our words. We could not keep the essence of the law: to love God with all our being and to love our neighbor as we love ourselves. Yet Jesus commanded even more – that we should love one another as He loves us. That is a massive impossibility. Jesus had to become our perfect Passover lamb to forgive our faults. Fifty days later another explosive event occurred: He gave us the Holy Spirit that we might keep His commands.

Both of these Pentecost events, occurring on the 50th day after delivery from bondage, were accompanied with great power. The first with smoke and thunder; the latter like a violent wind. This is the power of God. This is a perfect plan. We have been set free that we might be His people, knowing His commands, and having His Spirit in us to obey Him with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength. Salvation, mercy, revelation, and His Spirit – everything planned with perfection.
