Seeking Perfect Peace

Isaiah 26:3 You will keep him in perfect peace, who keeps his mind focused on You – because he trusts in You.

There is a quiet room at the medical center where I am currently undergoing rehabilitation. The lights are dim and there are beds where one can relax for 30 minutes in between the strenuous training sessions. The sign on the door reads: “Quiet! Cell Phone Free Zone.” I use the room often, as do others. Unfortunately, most of the people inside are on their cell phones. Friday there were 8 of us in the room and 7 people were on their phones. This is a true indicator of our time. Even in an environment structured to give people a chance to relax and have freedom from distraction – a “cell phone free zone” – people find it difficult to disconnect.

Though we are currently in the midst of difficult times, I believe that even greater chaos and stress is on the horizon. To remain in perfect peace, we must keep our focus firmly on Him. Many Christians are finding it difficult in the current rough waters to find any peace. If a more brutal storm hits, will we be prepared? Are we learning to be steadfast in His perfect peace?

Deep, inner peace is of greater significance than a “phone free” quiet room. For this peace we must not only do the near impossible task of disconnecting from our phones; we must actively seek God. Isaiah wrote: “I look for You during the night. My spirit seeks You at dawn…” (Isaiah 26:9)

Create a time every day when you disconnect from your cell phone, from social media, from the news, from every distraction that attempts to engage your thoughts – and seek God alone. Without His perfect peace, we will not survive the storms ahead.
