Parents – Part One

Psalm 78:3-4 What we have heard and learned – that which our ancestors gave to us – we will no longer hide from their descendants.

Psalms 78 is a song that was written to remind a current generation in Israel that they were tasked with passing on His ways to the next generation. Parents were to teach their children and grandchildren. It is about remembering the lessons of our parents, grandparents and great grandparents that are being lost to the next generations.

I will sing a song that imparts wisdom. I will speak of truths that are being covered in darkness.
What we have heard and learned – that which our ancestors gave to us – we will no longer hide from their descendants.
We pledge to tell the next generation about the glorious ways of our Lord; of His strength and His deeds.
He established order in Jacob; He created justice in Israel. He commanded our ancestors to make His truths known to their descendants, that the following generations, yet to be born, might also learn of them. That each generation, in turn, might tell their children.
So that every generation might have great confidence in God. That they would not forget His ways! That they might not neglect to obey His commands.

Around the world, in May, we honor mothers. In this devotion, I am extending a message of thanks to parents, to grandparents and great-grandparents. Yet in honoring them, I want to challenge you to remember the good things they attempted to pass on, even if they were not Christians. Think about encouraging stories you heard, lessons you were taught and good character traits that you witnessed. If you could pass along one golden nugget of truth from each of one of those ancestors, what would it be? Part One, from Psalm 78 is about remembering. We can’t pass on what we have forgotten or neglected to see.

“Thank You, Jesus, for our parents. Help us to honor them by reflecting on the wisdom and lessons from their lives.”
