A Simple Lamp

Matthew 5:14-15 You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. People do not light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand so that it gives light to all who are in the house.

There are many images Jesus could have used to describe His followers. He could have said you are hammers, swords, cushions or you are the umbrellas of the world. Think about it: each has a particular meaning. Jesus chose light. Light is quite special and important. It isn’t as aggressive as some options and not as passive as others. Light causes people to see in the darkness. It gives people a sense of direction. It brings hope and comfort when there is fear. When all of the lights go out, a simple lamp in the room brings clarity and focus. Everyone is drawn to that light.

Today I want to help you remember that this is who you are meant to be. Jesus wasn’t speaking to everyone when he said this. If you are His follower, these words are for you: you are the light of the world! In the midst of the darkness, uncertainty, and chaos, be that simple light. Don’t talk about it … be it.

People don’t light a lamp and put it under a basket. Who lit your lamp? God did. God brought your mind and heart from darkness to light. He lit you with His fire and goodness. Now you must keep that lamp burning bright and position it to bring light to others. No matter what is happening in your life or in the world, step back and hear His words: you are the light of the world. What can you do today to let that light shine?
