A Jesus-Sized Challenge

Luke 6:26-28 Woe to you when all people speak well of you, for they spoke well of the false prophets in ancient times. But I say to you: love your enemies, and do good to those who hate you. Bless those who curse you. Pray for those who mistreat you.

These are powerful words from Jesus for our time of increased hatred, evil for evil, and falsehood. If most people speak well of us, we are probably on the wrong side of the truth. People love those who say whatever they wish to hear; even if it is wrong or false. If we say what is true, many people will begin to hate us, speak evil against us, curse and mistreat us. That is when His words become challenging.

As people respond with hatred and curses directed at us personally, we should respond with love, good actions, blessings, and prayers. If that doesn’t overwhelm you with the difficulty of His command, you are a saint. I am not.

People often leave social media because they become overwhelmed with the hate-filled and selfish world that is often on display. Perhaps we should remain in a situation with people who may hate or mistreat us and treat them with respect, love and blessings. It is a task that is often too great for me, but it is a perfect opportunity to ask for Divine assistance. I will fail at this Jesus-sized task, but I can ask again for the grace and strength to try. Recognizing our inadequacies and asking for His help as we try to obey is what I believe He is asking. “Respond to hate with love and blessings.” It is almost as if social media platforms were created in order for us to practice this Jesus-sized challenge.
