Daniel 12:1,3 There will be a time of distress unlike any other … but the wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens and those leading many to righteousness will shine like the stars forever and ever.
When a preacher begins a sermon with a passage from the latter chapters of Daniel, everyone knows that an “end times” message is about to be delivered. That is not my intention. Yes, the entire world is in crisis. It is unsettling to see city streets desolate and long lines outside super markets. Who would have imagined that social media would be our only way to socialize? And there are rumors of economic uncertainty and further instability. However – there have been worse times in history, and according to Daniel 12, the greatest crisis is yet to come. My point today is that God gave instructions for His people during the days of great crisis. Surely those instructions are useful for us now. God’s directives are simple: don’t fear, be wise, and use the time to lead people to righteousness.
After Jesus told His disciples about the trials they would face and the events that would bring about the end, He told them to stay alert and be prepared. He then emphasized what He expected of His people with the following parables: The faithful servant in charge of the other servants, five foolish virgins and five wise, and finally, three servants who were given resources to use while their master was away. (Matthew 24 and 25) While many people are in panic mode, the followers of Jesus are to use their earthly and spiritual resources to accomplish His good work. We are to be prepared with His oil to light the way. We are to serve those who are weak and fearful.
For years we have been gathering in churches, encouraging one another, reading His word, and praising our almighty Father. Our spiritual storerooms should be filled with faith, strength, hope, and a readiness to serve! Daniel was told that during the great time of distress the wise would shine like the brightness of heaven and those leading many to righteousness would shine like the stars. Teach the immature. Encourage the weak. Give hope to those who are filled with fear. Though you may not know exactly how to do it, ask God for wisdom. Do not shrink back, this is our time to shine!
